Mentoring "Thought for the Week"

If you need support, don't forget to ask for it.

When I was growing up, my mom used to complain that I had what she called a "poker face".

She never knew what I was thinking or feeling, because I never let any of it show.

As I hid my pain behind a mask in fear of disappointing mom and dad with the inner horror of my eating disorder, I also trapped them in their fear and anger about not knowing what to say or do. I was so sure they knew and were judging me, when all along they just wanted to help.

Often, more support is available than what we avail ourselves of.

And we will never get better if we don't ask for help.

Relationships replace eating disorders. Period, the End.

If you need extra support, here are four simple ideas to try:
  1. Ask for it. You will never know if you don't ask
  2. Be specific about what you need (especially when asking someone who doesn't know anything about your eating disorder, or is afraid of it)
  3. If at first you don't hear a yes, don't give up - just keep asking until someone says yes
  4. Go to places where you know you will find support. For instance, talk to your mentor more often, and log in to the Community Forums more frequently

Your Questions: Our Answers
Pushing through the shame caused by an eating disorder

This question comes to us courtesy of Good News

Q&AQ: How do you push through the shame that comes with an ED? I recently got out of treatment (4mts. for alcohol and 3 mts. for alcohol and ED), but now that I am home I am in relapse. I don't know what to do.Thanks.

A: The best way to push through shame is by replacing it with accurate information. No one I know would dream of shaming a cancer patient for their inability to "will away" the cancer or "just get rid of" the cancerous cells. Yet we persist in thinking absolutely nothing of shaming ourselves and others for being unable to "just eat more" (or less or whatever it is we struggle with)......to read Founder Shannon Cutts' full answer, click HERE
