A Question for the First Laday

By Shannon Cutts

I have one question for Michelle Obama:

Did she have some particular reason for choosing the slogan "War on Obesity" when she formulated her plan to get America's kids in shape?

America's kids look to America's adults for mentoring in all areas of life. When they become tomorrow's leaders, it will be because of the leadership we are giving them today.

How they feel about themselves, the ways in which they relate to others, what they feel capable of deep inside their own skin, what (and whom) they love or hate.... well, we were all kids once too, so it's not too difficult to figure out how we got to be the way that we are. Someone taught us, guided us, influenced us, whether by omission or commission.

We are now doing the same for those who follow in our wake.

Unfortunately, we often don't notice the results of our influence until our kids start showing signs of stress. No matter how awkward or scary or inconvenient their breakdowns may be, there is no possible way we can pin the blame for their stress on them. So the culprit flaps around at large for awhile, squawking and screeching and just generally making a mess, until we finally reel it back in and claim it for our own.

Which is why I have just one question for Michelle Obama.

Mrs. First Lady, I want to know why, instead of the "War on Obesity" (which rolls out the red carpet for a continuation of weight and appearance-based stereotypes and prejudices) we couldn't have just called the campaign "Americans for Fit, Healthy Kids"?

You Are Invited! June 9, join Thom Rutledge for a teleconference you won't see anywhere else!

The MentorCONNECT Teleconference Series Presents:

Let's Talk About How Much This Sucks:
An Honest Conversation about the Hardest Parts of Recovery

Thom RutledgeIn this teleconference, Thom, with the able assistance of Jeanette H and Cheryl Kerrigan, does precisely what the title of this teleconference suggests.

THOM SAYS: The idea of recovery is a beautiful thing, but getting there is a messy and excruciatingly painful experience. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. It is essential that we be radically honest about what it takes to kick Ed out of your life and get you back in the driver's seat. Recovering from your eating disorder may be the hardest thing you ever do. Ironically, it can also be a lot of fun. Yes, that's what I said: fun.

When: Wednesday, June 9, from 8pm to 9:15pm Central Time

Thom, Jeanette and Cheryl take YOUR questions! :-)
Submit your questions till June 7th to mc@mentorconnect-ed.org

RSVP: Send an email to mc@mentorconnect-ed.org with "RSVP for Thom" in the subject line

"Pass the Hat - Pass the Hope"

In recovery communities it is traditional to "pass the hat", with each member giving what they can to support the group's ability to keep meeting. This month, as you log in to MC to attend chats or to blog or to join a group, consider putting a little into the group's hat so that we can continue to pass the hope that MC provides on and on.

MC's services are always free to members, but MC is not free to run and maintain.

Chapter twelve: The Mirror Has Two Faces

The Mirror has Two FacesIn 2004, 3,000 women from around the world were asked if they would describe themselves as "beautiful". Only 2% - 60 women - said YES.

Yet 100% of these women stated that "beauty is about who a person IS." (Dove Campaign for Real Beauty)

Hmmm.

In the movie "The Mirror Has Two Faces", Barbra Streisand plays a hauntingly autobiographical role as she learns to experience her own unique inner AND outer beauty, not at first through her own eyes, but through the eyes of someone else who teaches her that her beauty is on the surface too, yet is so much more than skin-deep.

Who in your life is showing you that you are beautiful - regardless of what Ed tells you about what HE sees in the mirror? How do you define "beauty" - and how is your definition different for other people than it is when you apply it to yourself? And how can you learn from Barbra how to see, claim, and celebrate your ownunique and multi-layered beauty?

You can post your insights and ideas HERE

Thom's Nutshell Wisdom

You can do great things and never come close to perfect.*

A perfectionist is not someone who does things perfectly. A perfectionist is someone who believes that she is supposed to do things perfectly. Not just perfect once or twice or once in a while, but all the time. Since true perfection is not humanly possible, if you are a perfectionist, you are holding yourself to an impossible standard. Ultimately, expecting this of yourself is not motivation; quite the contrary --- it is paralyzing.

If you are serious about recovering from your eating disorder, there will be no escaping the fact that you will also have to recover from your perfectionism. You can't order recovery ala carte ---- it's a package deal.
