... information about our next teleconference, coming up November 4th, featuring Jessica Setnick, registered dietician who will share her tips on navigating the sometimes tricky and often stressful holiday season.

... details on a new group just founded on MentorCONNECT called "Beyond Eating Disorders"

... a review on The Man in the Iron Mask and how it relates to an eating disorder.

... a good lesson by Thom Rutledge about perfectionism.

... and a whole lot more as well.

We hope you enjoy this week's "Mentoring Moment"!

Designed by MentorCONNECT founder Shannon, the MC "Circle of Hope" Pendant (which appears alongside the MentorCONNECT logo) reminds ALL of us that the relationships we have here with each other really DO replace eating disorders!

The best news of all is that, whether you order MC Ed Armor for yourself or to show your support for a friend who is struggling, you will also be giving back to your community!

100% of sales proceeds go back to MentorCONNECT to help with overhead, expenses, and new programs (like our upcoming retreat!)

The Man in the Iron Mask

The Man in the Iron Mask
In the movie The Man in the Iron Mask, Philippe, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, is imprisoned in an iron mask by his evil twin and co-heir, King Louis XIV. Louis imprisons Philippe because his brother is the only person with the strength to end his reign of terror over the people in his kingdom. At first, when Philippe is rescued from prison by the brave Musketeers and released from the mask, he is so frightened. He is disoriented, lost, and feels very alone. But slowly, he remembers the joys of freedom. By the time Louis XIV recaptures Philippe and attempts to re-imprison him within the iron mask, he fights and screams against it - this time, he knows what he is fighting for, and refuses to accept that imprisonment is the best he can hope for out of life.

Similarly, it is so easy to feel imprisoned by our eating disorder... and to let that feeling of powerlessness become more powerful than our power to break free! Just because we feel imprisoned today doesn't mean we can't break free tomorrow. There is never EVER a reason to give up hope, or to give up on ourselves and our right to live free. So now, instead of wasting energy worrying about whether we will be in prison with Ed forever, we can spend that precious energy contemplating the following questions:
  1. What are the benefits of staying in prison?
  2. What are the benefits of breaking out of prison?
  3. Do you believe that freedom is something you can have...and hold?
  4. What will it take for you to be able to accept and maintain your own freedom from your eating disorder?
Post your insights and ideas HERE

Thom's Nutshell Wisdom

You can do great things,
and never come close to perfect.*

A perfectionist is not someone who does things perfectly. A perfectionist is someone who believes that she is supposed to do things perfectly. Not just perfect once or twice or once in a while, but all the time. Since true perfection is not humanly possible, if you are a perfectionist, you are holding yourself to an impossible standard. Ultimately, expecting this of yourself is not motivation; quite the contrary --- it is paralyzing.

If you are serious about recovering from your eating disorder, there will be no escaping the fact that you will also have to recover from your perfectionism. You can't order recovery ala carte ---- it's a package deal.
